Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh is the easternmost district of Uttarakhand, neighbouring Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east. A place of exquisite natural beauty and serenity, Pithoragarh is popularly known as the 'Little Kashmir'. This captivating town with fascinating forests around it is located at an impressive height of 1,645 m and is nestled in a small valley. Pithoragarh town is a historical landmark. It was a major center of power during the regime of the Chand Kings in Kumaon. From here, pilgrims take their journey to the holy shrines, Kailash and Mansarovar.This valley also nestles the snow-crested peaks Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) and West (7,817 m). Below these mighty peaks lie the alpine valleys and glaciers like Milam, Ralam, Namik and Sundardunga.

This eastern most district of Uttaranchal popularly called as ‘Miniature Kashmir’, shares international boundary with China (Tibet) on the north and Nepal on the east. The northern parts are studded with majestic peaks like Nanda Devi (east), Nanda Devi (west), Trishul, Nandakot, Rajrambha, Panchachuli group etc. The alpine meadows and glaciers below these majestic mountains has made the district a virtual paradise for nature lovers.
Pithoragarh town, which is located in Soar or Soar valley, is also its headquarter. The district is the part of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state and which is also one of its administrative division. Pithoragarh has many temples and ruined forts reminiscent of the once flourishing reign of the Chand Kings. There is Tibet plateau situated to the north of the district. Nepal lies on the eastern borders. The River Kali originates from Kalapaani, forms its continuous eastern boundary with Nepal. It is an Indian border district with China. The Hindu pilgrimage route for Mount Kailash-Lake Manasarovar passes through this district via Lipu-Lekh pass in the greater Himalayas. The district is administratively divided into five tehsils, namely Munsiyari, Dharchula, Didihat, Gangolihat, and Pithoragarh. Naini Saini is the nearest civil airport.

Best Season / Best Time to Visit Pithoragarh
Pithorgarh has a cool but pleasant climate in summers and chilly climate in winters.

Summers (April to June) are very pleasant with moderate climate and the temperature ranges from 7-20°C. Summers are ideal for all sight seeing, temple visit and also for visiting nearby attractions.

Monsoons (August to November) are accompanied with light showers. The days are pleasant and the nights are chilly.

Winters (December to March) are chilly days with average minimum touching near 4°C, with maximum never crossing 8°C. Typically tourists avoid this season. The winters are accompanied with heavy snowfalls.

The best season to visit Pithorgarh is from April to November.
April to August offers cool and pleasant climate and the right period to spend relaxing moments in the outdoors and is ideal for temple visits.
September to November is good for sight seeing and this season is eye catching with beautiful sceneries.
December to March is chilly. Those who like snowbound vacations can opt for this season. Heavy woolen clothes are required for outings in this period.
