Raniji ki Baori Bundi

The Queen’s Stepwell or in local language “Raniji ki Baori” was the second attraction I toured in Bundi after Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri or 84 Pillared Cenotaph. Why? Its just 2 km away. The main reason I planned to visit Bundi was to visit this stepwell, as I am collecting pictures of all stepwells in India (read the about us page for why). So this was a crucial site for me and believe me it was worth visiting. Raniji ki Baori is a 17th century marvel build on the orders of Queen Nathavati, wife of a famous King of Bundi, Anirudh Singh. And this is where the stepwell got its name “Raniji ki Baori”.

History
This famous stepwell was constructed way back in the year 1699 and was commissioned by Rani Nathavati Ji, one of the queens of the then ruler of Bundi, Rao Raja Anirudh Singh. As the history behind this baori goes, Rani Nathavati Ji was the younger wife of ruler Rao Raja Anirudh Singh. She gave birth to a son, Maharao Raja Budh Singh. But the previous wife of the king who was unable to give birth to a baby became envious of the younger queen. Thus, Rani Nathavati Ji gave her son to the previous queen of the raja and devoted herself for the well being of the common man. She undertook the project of building a step well during the reign of his son Maharao Raja Budh Singh who ruled Bundi from 1695 AD to 1729 AD, thus it is known as Raniji ki Baori, stepwell by a Queen.

Structure
This baori is a well with steps and is 46 meters deep. It has a towering narrow entrance and its pillars are adorned with delicate carvings. A multi-floored arrangement with nice sculptures and terraces, it also has places for worshiping on every storey. The narrow entryway of the stepwell stands on 4 pillars and has a stone elephant statue on each of its corner. The archways of Raniji ki Baori are adorned with ogee brackets. During the medieval era, this baori was very popular meeting place for the local people for social and religious reasons.

Bundi Attractons

The Taragarh Fort in Bundi is undoubtedly its most popular tourist destination. Built in the 14th century, the fort is situated on a hilltop that is covered with trees and offers spectacular views of the town below. The fort complex also houses a water tank that used to supply water to the Bundi Palace. The Bundi Palace is another magnificent tourist spot, in its own right. Also built on a hill, perhaps a little before the fort, the architecture of the palace portrays the classic Rajputana style. Carvings and murals within the palace add an inexplicable charm, luring visitors from all over. The famous step-well in Bundi, called the Raniji Ki Baori, should not be missed. Built in the 17th century by Princess Rani Nathavatji, the well is about 46 meters deep and has a tall, arched gate and beautifully carved pillars. It is said that the best season to visit this unique step-well is in the monsoon. There are a number of other palaces and structures in Bundi that will make sure you don’t have a moment of boredom while visiting this vibrant Rajasthani city.
