Gorakhpur

The ancient Gorakhpur, in addition to modern, comprised the districts of Basti, Deoria, Azamgarh, and parts of Nepal Tarai.It is named after Saint Gorakhhnath. In older times Gorakhpur was part of the Koshal kingdom in 6th century B.C. The oldest monarch known to have ruled here was Iksvaku who established Kshatriya’s solar dynasty. Several big rulers originated from this dynasty, the greatest of which was Lord Rama.
