The Rambagh Palace History and Story

Rajasthan, through its erstwhile royalty and history steeped in princely living and legends, is a destination where you get transported back in time to relive the Rajput history. The royal palace which we see today was built back in the year 1835 and it is said to be built for Saffron Bardon, the queen’s favourite maid of the time. It was later refurbished as a royal guesthouse and a hunting lodge.

The mansion was named Rambagh after Prince Sawai Man Singh II, grandson of the then reigning Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, was bought back in the palace on his accession in 1922. Prince Sawai Man Singh II, while on his way to England to finish his studies, always dreamt of making Rambagh the royal family’s official residence and palace. On his return, he began actualizing his dream and transformed the Rambagh Palace into what it is today, with neatly manicured gardens as well as intricate and fine detailing which takes inspiration from the Mughal style of architecture.

In the year 1925, Rambagh Palace Jaipur became the permanent residence of the Maharaja of the princely state. The beautiful palace is spread around 47 acres of lush greens and is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur. The palace’s gate is always open for tourists from 10 AM in the morning till 6 PM in the evening where one can take a ticket and go for a stroll.
