Once a small village, it is now famous for being the hometown of one of the premier business and industrial family of India, the Birlas. The town is also known for Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS, Pilani), an all-India Institute for higher education, which is ranked amongst the top ten colleges in India. Late Mr G.D. Birla - an eminent industrialist and an associate of Mahatma Gandhi founded the Institute. Other places of interest are BITS Museum, Shiva Ganga, Saraswati temple and the Panchwati. Pilani has good hotels and is connected by road from Delhi and Jaipur. Its nearest railhead is Chirawa.

Panchvati - Built and managed by the Birla Group, Panchvati has a very important place in the history of Hindu religion. It is said, during the phase of 14 years of exile this very spot acted as a beautiful home to for Lord Rama. Because of the huge space dedicated to trees and shrubs any one who visits this very place feels as if he/she is standing in middle of a beautiful jungle. To understand various phases of life of Lord Ram, one can witness few statues of the selected characters of Ramayana which are more than enough to talk about that huge part of history.
