Ana Sagar is one of the most beautiful and historic attractions in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Surrounded by the Aravalli hills, this large artificial lake offers a peaceful escape from the busy city and is especially attractive during the evening when the surrounding landscape takes on warm golden colours.
History of Ana Sagar Lake
Ana Sagar Lake was constructed between 1135 and 1150 AD during the reign of the Chauhan ruler Arnoraja Chauhan, also known as Anaji. The lake takes its name from Anaji and was created as an important water reservoir for Ajmer. Rajasthan Tourism describes it as a scenic artificial lake commissioned by Arnoraj Chauhan.
The lake was later enhanced during the Mughal period. Emperor Jahangir developed the beautiful Daulat Bagh Gardens beside the lake, while Emperor Shah Jahan added five elegant marble pavilions known as Baradaris. These white marble structures remain one of the most attractive features of the lakeside.
Today, Ana Sagar combines natural beauty with layers of Rajput and Mughal history. Visitors can enjoy the lakeside promenades, gardens, views of the Aravalli hills and the historic marble Baradaris.
Best Time to Visit Ana Sagar Lake
The best time to visit Ana Sagar Lake is generally October to March, when Ajmer's weather is more comfortable for sightseeing. Rajasthan Tourism also recommends the October–February period for visiting Ajmer because daytime temperatures are pleasant during these months.
Early morning is suitable for visitors looking for a quieter atmosphere and pleasant views. Late afternoon and sunset are particularly attractive for photography, as the changing light creates beautiful views across the lake and marble pavilions.
During the summer months, temperatures in Ajmer can become very high, so early morning or evening visits are more comfortable. The monsoon season can bring greener surroundings and increased water levels, although rain may sometimes affect outdoor activities.

By Train :
Ajmer Junction Railway Station is the main railway station serving the city. Ajmer has good rail connections with Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur and other major cities. From the railway station, visitors can take an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw or taxi to reach the lake.
By Road :
Ajmer is well connected by road with Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Delhi and other cities of Rajasthan and northern India. Local taxis, auto-rickshaws and buses can be used to reach Ana Sagar Lake.
By Air :
Kishangarh Airport is the nearest airport serving Ajmer, while Jaipur International Airport is the nearest major airport with broader flight connectivity. From either airport, visitors can continue to Ajmer by taxi or other road transport.
