Khonoma Green Village

Khonoma is India’s first green village. Situated near the Indo-Myanmar border, in the Indian state of Nagaland, its journey to attain the tag of a Green Village was not an easy one, as hunting is embedded as a way of life in the people here.

Famed as Asia's first green village, the centuries-old Khonoma Village is a great place to introduce yourself to the Naga lifestyle and unwind in the lap of nature. A visit to the village offers tourists an opportunity to interact with the people of the local Angami tribe and learn about how they have succeeded in creating a more conserved and sustainable ecosystem for themselves. Tourists can also choose to spend a night at the village and experience traditional homestays managed by locals.

The village is also known for being one of the cleanest villages of Nagaland, thanks to the availability of dustbins and public toilets. Tourists can also enjoy birdwatching and trekking during their visit to Khonoma. Lying on the outskirts of the city, the village is known for successfully conserving rare and endangered species of animals and plants as well as terrace cultivation on the slopes of hills.

How To Reach :

Attractions
The local culture of the Angami Naga people, their history and the eco-friendly environment and clean surrounding are the primary attraction here. The village walk is a popular tourist activity. It is recommended that a local guide is hired without whose help it will be difficult for a visitor to understand the intricacies of the local culture. The memorials of the British and native soldiers are a must visit which tells the story of multiple attacks and defence by the fierce Naga tribe. The small fort on top of the village is also an attraction. There is a big muzzle loading gun in the village which is about 7 feet in length and attracts tourist attention.
