Dampa Tiger Reserve

Dampa Tiger Reserve or Dampha Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve of western Mizoram, India. It covers an area of about 500 km2 (190 sq mi) in the Lushai Hills at an altitude range of 800–1,100 m (2,600–3,600 ft). It was declared a tiger reserve in 1994 and is part of Project Tiger.

The tropical forests of Dampa Tiger Reserve are home to a diverse flora and fauna. It consists of forest interpolated with steep precipitous hills, deep valleys, jungle streams, ripping rivulets, natural salts licks. Dampa Tiger Reserve is not easily accessible unlike other park where you can ride on a four wheeler but one has to walk through the forest if one wishes to sight animals.

One can sale the steep precipitous hills or go down with deep valleys, enjoy a few moments stay beside the natural salts licks. Birding can be a good sport here Hoolock gibbon or Assamese macaque can be spotted. Jungle safari to see herds of wild elephant’s one can even encounters agile leopards.

By Air – Dampa is 135 kilometers from Aizwal. Aizawl, the capital town of Mizoram is linked by Alliance Air Service everyday to Kolkata nearly 1 hour 45 minutes, Guwahati is 40 minutes and Imphal is 30 minutes. Nearest major airport is Shillong. Indian Airlines connects Aizawl to rest of India via Guwahati, Imphal and Kolkata. Lengpui airport at Aizawl is connected with Guwahati, Silchar & Kolkata. It is well connected to all the capital cities of the north eastern states of India. Aizawl is also connected to Kolkata, 1547 kilometers by air, through which it is connected to the rest of the India.

By Rail - Silchar to W.Phaileng (Via Aizawl) is 280 kilometers. Dampa is located 130 kilometers away from Aizawl. Nearest major airport is Shillong. The nearest rail station is in Silchar, which is 185 kilometers away from Aizawl. One can travel from Guwahati to Silchar by Barak Valley Express, Cachar Express or the Tripura Passenger.

By Road - Aizawl to W.Phaileng is 100 kilometers, Aizawl to Teirei is 119 kilometers and Aizawl to Phuldungsei is 142 kilometers. Dampa is located 135 kilometers away from Aizawl. National Highway number 54 connects Aizwal with the rest of the country through Silchar. Buses and taxis are available from Silchar to Aizwal. 24 hours bus services are available. Aizawl can be approached by road from Shillong and Guwahati. Taxis can be hired on all days from any part of Mizoram.
