Places to Visit Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is about as far west as most people get in India. It’s incredibly dry, hot and isolated. So what is it that brings people to a city a stone’s throw away from the Pakistan border? The ‘Golden City’ as it has come to be known as a majestic place. A huge fort sits atop a hill in the center of the city, overlooking the sun-kissed houses. Sand dunes not far from the city are a tourist hotspot for camel safaris and jeep tours. There are so many great little spots I discovered and awesome things to do in Jaisalmer, the ‘Golden City’ of India.

Alive with colourful stalls, hotels, restaurants, a museum, a palace and so on, a visit to the Jaisalmer fort will be the most fun part of your trip. A few main tourist attractions within Jaisalmer fort include the Jain temples, The Royal Palace and Laxminath temple. With so much to offer it doesn’t come as a surprise that Jaisalmer fort is among the top places to visit in Jaisalmer in 2 days.

Sam Sand Dunes
A bumpy ride on a camel is one of the exciting things to do in Jaisalmer. The more time you devote to safari, the more you will enjoy the desert tranquillity. The wavy stretch of golden yellow sand offers a picturesque and unobstructed view of the true expanse of the great Thar Desert. Plan a single day trip to the dunes by availing jeep safari or camel ride. You will get the real feeling of travelling in a desert and witness sunrise and sunset and enjoy brilliant scenery. You can plan to stay overnight in mud huts and Swiss tents. Spend the night stargazing under the open sky, as the stars will be clear and perfectly visible due to the purity of the air and almost non-existent pollution. Warm hospitality and delicious Rajasthani cuisine will enchant you. Campfires make the night awesome as well. Don’t miss the rustic, earthy musical Rajasthani folk dance of the gypsies. Adventurous activities like camel safari, jeep safari, and paragliding are the best. Visit Sam Sand Dunes from October to March as all the camps and evening musical programs are not available at other times. Away from the conventional site, spend some time under the open sky and seek solace. Sam Sand Dunes is an experience of a lifetime, with its barren and unadorned natural beauty.

Kuldhara village has no sign of human life and is also known as one of the haunted places in India. This is one of the most interesting tourist attractions that you should absolutely include in your itinerary. It is said to be a spooky and haunted village with its fair share of legends and myths. There have been stories of ghostly and paranormal activities but there is no solid proof of it.
Kuldhara was once inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins. A clan of eighty-five homes were evacuated within a night due to some adverse happenings. As per a popular story, the residents of the entire area left the place overnight to save their honour and lives from the hands of the tyrannical minister who ruled over this place. There have been no traces, where and how the villagers left their homes. It is said that while leaving, the villagers had put a curse saying anyone dwelling in the village will have to meet death. Since then there have been no signs of a human dwelling or any other activities in the surroundings.
