History of Shree Khatu Shyam Mandir
The history of Shree Khatu Shyam Mandir is rooted in the Mahabharata epic. The deity, Khatu Shyam, is the brave warrior Barbarik, grandson of Bhima. He had a vow to fight for the weaker side in the Kurukshetra war.
To prevent an imbalance, Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, asked for Barbarik’s head as a sacrifice. Barbarik, a great devotee, willingly gave it. Impressed by this act, Krishna blessed him, declaring that he would be worshipped as “Shyam” in the Kali Yuga.
His head was later found buried in the village of Khatu. The current temple, built with white marble, was constructed in 1027 CE by King Roop Singh Chauhan, who was instructed in a dream to enshrine the head. The temple stands as a symbol of immense sacrifice and devotion.

During his journey to the battlefield, Lord Krishna, recognizing the potential threat Barbarika posed due to his unmatched prowess, approached him in disguise. Krishna tested Barbarika’s dedication and asked him who he would support in the war. Barbarika, bound by his vow to support the weaker side, replied that he would switch sides as the battle progressed to ensure the weaker side always had an upper hand. Realizing the implications of such a powerful warrior shifting sides, Krishna asked for Barbarika’s head as a sacrifice.
Barbarika, demonstrating his unwavering devotion, offered his head to Krishna, who blessed him with the boon of being worshipped in Kaliyuga (the present age) as Shyam, a name synonymous with Krishna himself. This act of supreme sacrifice and devotion elevated Barbarika to the divine status of Khatu Shyam Ji.
